Some major news broke today in regards to the world of professional wrestling. While at the airport waiting for his luggage, a TMZ paparazzo asked WWE superstar Darren Young does he think it's possible that a wrestler could be gay and successful in the business (please let the others be John Cena and CM Punk) to which he admitted on camera that he is in fact gay.
“Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy. …..Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?
I guess if you want to call it a “coming out,” I don’t really know what to say it is. I’m just letting you know that I’m happy with who I am. I am comfortable with myself.”
Here is what the WWE said in a statement:
On TMZ this morning, WWE Superstar Darren Young revealed to the WWE Universe that he is gay. WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.
If he is gay then I say congratulations. I believe everyone has the right to live their truth as they see fit without shame or judgement from others who don't have the balls to be themselves. At first I was on the fence with Darren't revelation, because sometimes those TMZ cameramen can be such assholes with their taunting and with so many celebrities pretending to be gay or bisexual just to get the LGBT community to buy their products. When I first watched the video I will admit I gave a bit of cautious side-eye, but after analyzing the video a few times, I actually believe Darren.
I'm sure now this will be the perfect time for the WWE script writers to capitalize on this (like they did with Orlando Jordan's bisexuality) and if they decide to fire or bench him for coming out (like I heard they did with Jordan), I'm sure there will be plenty of LGBT organizations that will take them to task for it.
