For those of you who watch Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (but are afraid to admit it), one of the things I love about the show (besides the fact that underneath all the crazy is a loving family) is that while there are stereotypes in regards to southern folk not being open to gay people, it's good to see that a southern family shows unconditional love towards Sugar Bear's openly gay brother Lee "Uncle Poodle" Thompson and could give a damn about his sexual orientation.
Uncle Poodle is opening up for the first time about his private life, saying that he had his boyfriend arrested after he discovered that he had infected him with HIV last year.
"I was adamant about getting my HIV status checked on a regular basis. On March 16, 2012, I tested negative. Then, in May of 2012 my test results came back positive. I knew it had been my boyfriend who infected me. I later learned he had been HIV positive and was not taking medication and had not bothered to tell me about it. I was advised that I should press charges and, hesitantly, I did. It was the right thing to do. He is serving a 5-year sentence. I would have been cool with his HIV status if he had been honest. I don’t have an issue with the disease. I would have known how to protect myself."
While he didn't go into detail in regards to how he contracted the virus (I'm guessing from his above statement he had bareback sex with his boyfriend), he also goes on to call people who have unprotected sex "damn fools." It also goes to show that sex and protecting yourself from contracting sexually-transmitted diseases is something that needs to be talked about in this country, especially amongst gay men. Since the only way things get done in the country is if some celebrity or reality star is going through, maybe this will open up a dialogue when it comes to gay men getting into relationships with someone and being adamant about protecting themselves.
