Most people may know David S. Goyer from his contributions to The Dark Knight trilogy, but the franchise that really put him on the map as a writing force to be reckoned with is the Blade trilogy and short-lived TV series.
If it wasn't for Blade being the first Marvel movie out the gate to make a shitload of money about a flawed superhero, I personally believe there would be no X-Men, Captain America, Iron Man, and the countless other superhero movies that followed. Hell, The Matrix copied bullet time from Blade.
New Line owned the rights to the Blade movies, but now that New Line is no more and Disney secured the rights in 2011, the studio (who also bought Marvel) is planning to reboot the franchise. Here is what Goyer had to say about the reboot in an interview with Crave Online:
Now that Marvel/Disney have recaptured the rights, I’m sure it will be [remade]. They made too much money on that character to not reboot him at some point…I mean, look, between merchandise and whatnot, that little character generated almost a billion dollars.
Blade Trinity came out in 2004, so it's been almost nine years since we've gotten ourselves a proper Blade movie. Besides, the first film is my absolute favorite film of the trilogy, and while the second film held it's own in regards to non-stop action and solid writing, the franchise needs to be redeemed after the horrible third film. Jessica Biel was a mess as Whistler's daughter Abigail (who even knew he had kids?). Ryan Reynolds annoyed the shit out of me as Hannibal King and Dominic Purcell as Dracula/Drake was not convincing at all.
Wesley Snipes (who also produced the films) was awesome as Blade, but since he's in jail and his star has waned a bit, I have always in past discussions about the Blade reboot have championed for Idris Elba or Michael Jai White to play Blade. idris might get the role since he's the bigger star, but as long as there is a good script I'm pretty open for a new Blade.
The Blade films don't really need a big budget like The Avengers to get made, so I think if they keep the story simple and dark with the same swagger like the first film (meaning cool vampires, kick-ass street-level fight scenes and awesome special effects), the film would be fucking awesome. Now bring on reboots of The Punisher and Daredevil (two franchises I can see working much better on the small screen, like on FX or HBO).
