SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE RENEWED FOR 10TH SEASON

While Abby Lee Miller is busy giving the dance community a bad name with her two dance shows over on Oxygen, and MTV did us all a favor by canceling the downright unwatchable America's Best Dace Crew, at least we still have one authentic dance show to keep us excited in Summer, 2013.

Word on the street is that FOX has renewed So You Think You Can Dance for a 10th season. Nigel Lithgoe, who produces SYTYCD and American Idol (and also judges the former) revealed the good news on Twitter:

“Great news for Christmas: FOX officially picked up Season 10 of #SYTYCD # DanceOnFox. First audition City Austin TX. #MyBestChristmasGift.” – Nigel Lythgoe’s Twitter

“I couldn’t be more proud of the amazing work that Nigel and the entire So You Think You Can Dance team has done over the past nine seasons. This show is truly one of the most compelling series on television and I can’t wait to bring it back for Season 10,” – Mike Darnell (Fox’s President of Alternative Entertainment)
I am a huge fan of SYTYCD, but the way FOX was acting it was as if they treated the show like the bastard cousin to American Idol, a show that's been on it's last legs since Adam Lambert lost to Kris Allen. Last season SYTYCD took a page out of ABDC's handbook and started airing the show once a week instead of twice, and would eliminate the dancers at the end of each episode. I actually thought that was a great idea, since the show can be two hours every week and the dancers would be forced to dance for their lives instead of sweating it out for an hour on a time-wasting results show (are youl istening, AI?)
I understand SYTYCD struggles in the ratings, but what I love about the show is that it's not about getting some of-the-monent fame whore on the show and it makes it about the contestants. When I watch SYTYCD it's like watching art on stage, especially with pieces by Sonja Tayeh, Mia Michaels and travis Wall. I just hope they stick to the formula that works and won't follow the same path as these singing shows, because then I would look at SYTYCD as one big sellout. Besides, unlike American Idol, The Voice and X-Factor, SYTYCD has launched more careers than all of those shows combined! Alex Wong is in Newsies and that new laptop commercial with Daniel "Cloud" Campos, Travis Wall creates pieces for SYTYCD and recently choreographed a new show on broadway and has his own reality show, Mark Kanemura is the lead male dancer for Lady Gaga, Lacey Schwimmer dances on Dancing With The Stars as well as Dimitri Chaplin, Twitch was in a few movies, including the last three Step Up films, etc. So SYTYCD may not bring the melodrama like all these singing shows we're being saturated with, but one thing is for sure and that is they pay respect to the art of dance.
