As some of you may or may not know, Matt Damon is set to play Liberace's lover in the upcoming HBO film, Behind The Candelabra. Now for the first time he opens up to Playboy magazine as to why he never addressed the gay rumors in regards to his relationship with childhood buddy Ben Affleck ever since they won the Academy Award in 1997 for their breakout film Good Will Hunting.
"I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay -- as if being gay were some kind of fucking disease...the whole thing was just gross," Damon told the magazine. "But look, there have been great signs of progress -- the fact that Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres can come out so beautifully and powerfully, and it’s a big f**king deal that it turns out nobody gives a shit. If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life."
Matt also gave his thoughts on playing Scott Thorson in the film and his relationship with the flamboyant performer: "These two men were deeply in love and in a real relationship -- a marriage -- long before there was gay marriage," Damon says of the real-life pair. "That’s not an insignificant thing. The script is beautiful and relatable. Their conversations when they’re dressing or undressing or having a spat or getting ready for bed? That’s every marriage."
I have to say I love Matt's approach to the matter. he didn't address it because people put such a negative conotation to being gay, like you should be ashamed of who you are. If a man is secure in his own sexuality he doesn't need to address rumors about his sexuality. Ever since he did The Talented Mr. Ripley he has taken more shit for the rumors, but the set off point was when people couldn't understand that you could be affectionate towards someone of the same gender (like Affleck) on a friendship level without it having to escalate to blowing him. It was appropriate for him to mention it now because of his role in the Liberace movie. The press will constantly hound him with stupid questions like his friendship with Ben and what it was like to kiss Michael Douglas.
