R. Kelly is bringing another chapter of his Trapped In The Closet saga to the IFC channel this weekend, but don't think his long ass hip hop musical is set to stop there. Now the singer/songwriter/professional underage watersports champion wants to bring Trapped In The Closet to Broadway.
Trapped in the Closet is a 23-chapter song series released from 2005 to 2012. Each song features its own music video, which tells the story of a man namd Sylvester (played by R. Kelly in the videos) who, after waking up from a one-night stand, is forced to hide in the woman's closet in order to prevent being caught by her boyfriend. This sets off a wacky and hilarious chain of events. Kelly reportedly has an additional 62 chapters of the series in the works as well.
Here's what he said about the possibility of turning the series into a Broadway show during a recent Q&A: “just got an offer from Broadway to do a Broadway version.” But the real question remains will he star in the play like he does in all the music videos, or hire a broadway actor to play the role of Sylvester? “That’s what’s being negotiated right now because it takes a lot of time to do these chapters—I’m the only one in the studio writing these chapters,” he said.
I'm personally not a fan of the Trapped In The Closet series and don't think many tourists would be interested in paying money to see a play about farting little people, knife-wielding deacons and a bunch of loud-mouthed strippers. Now if this was playing for a short run at say the Beacon Theater or the Apollo like the latest Tyler Perry play that would be one thing. Broadway holds itself at a different standard and R. Kelly's hoodrattedness ain't it. The only thing that would probably make me want to even see this play is if Kells has someone actually come out of that closet they're trapped in.
