For tha past two weeks I have been enjoying the new season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and the show's breakout star NeNe Leakes definitely has no problem letting everyone know she's a very rich bitch. The reality star, who also stars on the hit NBC series The New Normal spoke to The Insider about being the breadwinner of her family (which is why I have a feeling her ex-husband Gregg is trying to get back with her) and why she is the reason RHOATL is the biggest franchise on Bravo.
"Well A, because of Nene! [laughs] Housewives does really well because of Nene Leakes and what I have to say is, in the franchise of the Real Housewives, we are the only brown girls. You can always turn on the TV and see those Beverly Hills girls, those Miami girls, those New Jersey girls, your New York girls and you still sorta kinda get the same flavor, but when you [tune into] the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’, you are getting a group of brown girls.
[...] I just think that we are entertaining, and with us, we are not so plastic surgery. I think when you turn on the TV and see these other franchises, everybody is just so plastic! [Their] lips and faces are just pulled so tight and we are just regular girls. We’re really keeping it real and I’m always so surprised when people say, ‘Are you guys scripted?’ We’re so not scripted, we are just a disaster [laughs]. We just get up there and do it! We don’t mind the cameras! We’re all very open to the cameras, so we make a great team.
I have to say I agree with NeNe on her opinion in regards to the show. NeNe has and always will be the big star of the show, and it clearly shows she's right since the A-list producers and writers like Ryan Murphy aren't calling any of the other cast mates to be on their shows. During season 4 she was also the highest paid star on the show and I wouldn't be surprised if she was offered more money this season. Also what other show would give you famous phrases like "close your legs to married men," "trash box hooker," and "donkey booty," to name a few? the wannabe glamazons of the 5,000 other housewives spin-offs don't have the brain power to even come up with funny one-liners like the ladies of ATL have.
Unlike the other shows there comes a different kind of attitude and sass with the girls from ATL, whereas on shows like NYC, NJ, BH etc, they all try to come across as elegant on the outside but mean girls on the inside. The ladies of ATL bring more energy, hilarity and stand out more in regards to their personalities. Besides, I think people who are not white always pay more attention when we do see ourselves on TV, since white people do have more programs on TV and in the movies. My only issue is now that NeNe in her words "has arrived," how long can she continue to ride the housewives train while transitioning to more mainstream TV and possible movies without people no longer willing to take her beyond cartoon fare? As much as I love NeNe I think she needs to make this season her final one.
