LENNY KRAVITZ TO PLAY MARVIN GAYE IN BIOPIC
It's been a long time coming, but it looks like it's finally going to happen. Deadline is reporting that singer/actor Lenny Kravitz is set to play singer/songwriter Marvin Gaye in an upcoming movie about his life.
The film, which will be directed by Julien Temple (The Filth and the Fury) will focus primarily on Gaye's life in London in the early 1980's, the film will focus on Gaye's struggle against addiction prior to his untimely death in 1984 when he was shot by his own father.
A biopic on Marvin Gaye has been long in the works, with F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, Set It Off) set to direct. Jessie L. Martin (Rent, Smash season 2) was set to star and at one point it was rumored that Usher was interested in playing Gaye. So far there is no update on if Gary Gray's version will see the light of day, but Temple's version has secured all necessary musical rights.
This will be Kravitz's first leading role, having played small parts in the hit movies Precious, The Hunger Games and the upcoming Lee Daniels film The Butler. His daughter Zoe also starred in X Men: First Class.
