JJ ABRAMS & JON FAVREAU TALK DIRECTING STAR WARS EPISODE 7
Ever since Disney announced that they were buying LucasFilm and were planning to release three more Star Wars movies, every big name you can think of has been tossed around. Recently Steven Speilberg and Quentin Tarantino turned down offers to helm the iconic franchise, but other names being tossed around is none other than director/producer JJ Abrams, who has given us some of the best thought-provoking action-packed TV shows in the last decade (Alias, Lost, Fringe, etc.)
When JJ (who is putting the finishing touches on the upcoming Star Trek sequel) was asked by Holywood Life if he would consider directing Star Wars Episode 7, here is what he said:
"Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!"
So in other words he is saying that he loves the series so much that he doesn't want to fuck it up, which is understandable because taking on such an iconic movie franchise is a huge amount of pressure. Hollywood Life also spoke to Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1 & 2, Revolution) about the upcoming Star Wars film, and here's what he said:
"I think both J.J. and I come from a generation of people who formed our whole creative persona around what we experienced as kids from watching those films, and I have had the good fortune of working with George [Lucas] and around George, and whether it is doing a voice on Clone Wars, or being at the Skywalker Ranch mixing Iron Man – so I have been very happy and lucky to just experience the culture that Lucas has created, both in my own life growing up as a kid and professional – whether it was interviewing him at film festivals on stage, he is just a really wonderful, talented gifted guy who has changed the business so much, so I am just giddy, first and foremost as a fan, to see what happens with it. I think there is a lot of question marks of how they are going to do it, and who they are going to do it with, and what the story is going to be about; but to say that I am not excited about it is definitely an understatement. We’ll see."
I like Jon's work as well, and if he's up to the task I say let him go HAM on the film. I'm sure since he is a fan he will do it justice. If all else fails and you can't get the previously mentioned, as well as other genre filmmakers like Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) Peter Jackson (Lord Of The Rings trilogy), Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2) or Robert Rodriguez (who is putting the finishing touches on Machete Kills and I believe is set to direct the Sin City sequel A Dame To Kill For) to commit to extensive periods of making these movies, I say get Joseph Kosinski to direct the next Star Wars film. Even though the script wasn't that great (it was written by the same duo who created the excellent ABC series Once Upon A Time) I thought he did an awesome job with Tron Legacy. If the mainstream directors are afraid to touch it, how about a YouTube contest of any young directors who can shoot a really cool short film showing their skills. If they are as good as Kosinsky's (who shot a short Tron film which got him the gig to make the movie) and based on fan votes then you hire that person to shoot it.
