CW ORDERS WONDER WOMAN PILOT; CASTING DETAILS

Two years ago NBC tried and failed miserably with their pilot of Wonder Woman, which was being worked on by David E. Kelley (Picket Fences, Harry's Law). Personally speaking Mr. Kelley usually has a great track record when it comes to TV when it comes to it being about lawyers, but his take on Wonder Woman looked ridiculous. Now with the success of Arrow, The CW has moved forward with plans to bring the Amazon princess to the small screen.

According to Deadline, the new take on the DC Comics heroine will not focus on Diana, but may actually focus on a new iteration of Wonder Woman with a new character named Iris.

The site managed to get their hands on a character description being used in the casting process. They note that the network is looking for particularly tall actresses to play the part, asking for those who audition to be 5'8" or taller. The leaked description reads as follows:

She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.

The concept sounds pretty good, but I have no idea why they are going with a different character named Iris instead of Diana, but I do have a theory that maybe Iris is a code name for the ladies who will be auditioning not to give details on if they will actually be playing Diana. A lot of times writers like to throw the public off when it comes to shows being developed, because if you ever read the entertainment or genre movie sites, there's always someone with an opinion that something will suck before they've seen a lick of film.

I do know that only the pilot script, with the working title Amazon has been ordered. It's being written by Allan Heinberg, who wrote on the series Gilmore Girls and has also written a few Wonder Woman comics, so being that Heinberg is taking the character back to the beginning with a retelling of the origin the series may be in great hands. I'vve said it before and I'll say it again - The CW needs to rethink how they will run their channel, because the shows with the biggest ratings are their action-based shows, like Nikita, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and Arrow. Stop concentrating on shows that should have been canceled a long time ago like 90210, Emily Owens, that Rachel Bilson show and Beauty and the Beast and focus on more grown-up fare and shows with some action in it. Here's hoping the new Wonder Woman series will be the next Arrow and not fall a part like NBC's version of WW because it's time the ladies get their own superhero.
