AURAL ORGASM: SKREAM Feat. KELIS - COPYCAT
While some of us dance music heads and her international audience wait for Kelis to drop another excellent but underrated album (in the U.S. that is), the singer has lent her hoarse vocals to a minimalist EDM track with DJ/producer Skream called Copycat which sounds like it would fit quite nicely on her FleshTone album. What I love about this track especially is that Kelis has always come out as the rebellious pop star with multicolor hair and experimenting with different musical genres, before people like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and a few others who came along and jacked her style (via their lazy stylists), which is basically (without mentioning names) what the song is all about.
Here's what she told Rap-Up.com in an interview a few years ago when the always delusional "Little Monsters" accused Kelis of being a Gaga wannabe with her outrageous fashions.
“Yeah. I tried not to see, but it’s noticeable.”
“They’re really young. What else are they supposed to do?”
“I’ve been around for a long time and that’s what artists do; we take from each other and we recycle… And quite frankly, it may not even be them. It might be stylists that have been around as long as I have and are like, ‘Hey, let’s recycle this on these younger artists.’”
Point. Blank. And the period. We could go on forever about people who recycle everyone's looks. Hell there's a segment of it on Fashion Police called Bitch Stole My Look. But there has to come a point where people have their own ideas and stop taking from artists who have already worn what you are wearing and you think people are too stupid to do the research to see that the outfits have been worn already.
