The last time many of us saw Lana Wachowski she was known to the world as Larry and had co-written and co-directed one of the most influential sci-fi movies of the decade: The Matrix trilogy. Since then the siblings have directed the Speed Racer movie (which was a flop) and produced a few movies, like V For Vendetta. Rumors had been running around Hollywood about Larry's transition into a woman, and as we get closer to the release of the Wachowski's latest epic film Cloud Atlas, Lana has opened up for the first time about her fears when she finally admitted to herself that she was in the wrong body.
Here's what she told The New Yorker in a recent interview:
"For years, I couldn’t even say the words ‘transgendered’ or ‘transexual’. When I began to admit it to myself, I knew that I would eventually have to tell my parents, and my brother and my sisters. The fact would inject such terror in me that I would not sleep for days… My biggest fears were all about losing my family. Once they accepted me, everything else has been a piece of cake.”
I think the same feeling Lana felt is the same feeling many in the LGBT community feel when they are afraid to tell their parents about how they really feel inside. I am proud that Lana can finally live in her truth and that her family has accepted her. I've been a fan of the Wachowskis since Bound and of course I love the Matrix movies so I am looking forward to Cloud Atlas. I just hope that Hollywood will be kind to her, since we all know the industry is a bit slow when it comes to respecting women, gays, and transgender folk outside of the stereotypes presented on TV and film.
