SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen the season finale of The L.A. Complex, don't read further. SPOILER ALERT: During the two-part season finale of The L.A. Complex, after pulling the plug on his father (who had a stroke) and getting blackmailed by a wannabe rapper named Infinite who wound up getting his hands on a hard drive containing Kaldrick and then-producer Tariq in an intimate embrace, the closeted rapper pulled a Frank Ocean and outed himself on his blog:
"And when I finally found someone that I thought I could love and love me back, it made me hurt them... I have wanted to die because I could not be who I wanted to be. Who you wanted me to be. But I couldn't be... None of these lies I told made me stronger. None of the secrets I kept made me happier. My name is Sean Duggan. AKA Kaldrick King. AKA The King of California. I'm gay."
Although I love all the intertwining stories on The L.A. Complex, Kaldrick's story really hits close to home, especially being someone who is an artist, gay and non-white who understands that a mainstream rapper has a long road ahead of him being the only rapper in "thug drag" who will have to deal with lots of interviews focusing on his sexuality and the homophobia that exists in the urban community. Should the CW bring the Canadian import back for a third season, I really want to see where they will take this story, since The L.A. Complex is the closest portrayal of people struggling to make it in the entertainment industry as we'll get without it being a reality show.
