As we get closer to the September 18th release of Nelly Furtado's new album The Spirit Indestructible, the more I have a feeling this album is going to be a floppy hot mess. Don't get me wrong. I loved her ever since she dropped her awesome debut album Whoa! Nelly over a decade ago, and I thought her best music came when she worked with Timbaland on Loose. But without Timbo's creative expertise on this new record, the self-consciousness is visible throughout this album and highlights all the weak aspects of Nelly's voice (which often comes across as nasally). The potential for the songs are there, especially the middle section of the album (Waiting for the Night and Hold Up should have been a TSI single instead of the mediocre ones we've heard so far), but when you have created something as iconic as Loose back in 2006, we should expect a lot more from her than this.
