Robin Thicke, who has clearly become the hottest blue-eyed soul singers in a long time has decided to put the baby making music on the backburner and has gone disco on his next album. I'm not talking about the white, frat boy disco currently polluting the airwaves with their harsh beats and uninspired nursery rhyme lyrics. I'm talking about the soulful sounds of the 70's created by the blacks and gays that still to this day do not get the credit they deserve for giving us some of the best dance music in a long time.
Mr. Thicke is currently in the studio working on his“black disco” project with Niles “Cyrano” Hollowell-Dhar, who is one half of the broken up producing/writing duo The Cataracs (Far East Movement, Dev, 50 Cent). “Robin doesn’t want to do anything that sounds too contemporary,” he told Rap-Up.com. “He wants to make a black disco album. Everyone has a different interpretation of what [black disco] means,” said Niles, who cut three records with Thicke. “For me, I went back and listened to Marvin Gaye and the Bee Gees and got inspired. I put my own twist on it. It’s sounding great.”
In addition to collaborating with Dhar on three songs, Robin is also working on tracks with Pharrell and will.i.am. Now all we need for him to do is give disco legend Nile Rodgers a call and his album will most definitely be complete. I have to say I'm glad Robin plans to inject some soul into dance music, because it's something that has been missing from the genre for a long time. Not every dance beat has to be about fist pumping and popping bottles in the club while you drop it low on the dance floor.
