You have to pretty much be deaf, dumb and blind to not notice the lack of positive, supportive roles for black women in the entertainment industry unless it's a Tyler Perry film. Actress Reagan Gomez, who you may all remember as Robert Townsend's daughter on the 90's sitcom Parenthood and plays Roberta on The Cleveland Show (she also guest-starred two weeks ago as Wesley Jonathan's girlfriend on the new TV Land sitcom The Soul Man) has opted to take her career into her own hands by writing and producing a new web series called Almost Home. It stars Jackie Long, Wesley Jonathan, DeJuan Turrentine, her hubby DeWayne Turrentine and Denyce Lawton.
Below is a Synopsis of Almost Home:
After the death of their mother, Lisa (Reagan Gomez) and DeJuan (DeJuan Turrentine) decide to live out her dream and move to sunny California. Lisa quickly finds a job while DeJuan gives up engineering school to become a singer. All seems well, but old troubles find them… mainly, Lisa’s abusive fiancé. Lisa learns to embrace her stronger self, while DeJuan learns a little responsibility isn’t such a bad thing.
I've always said if you want to see a change in Hollywood's perception of a certain "minority," then you have to take your career into your own hands and make those changes happen. Last year Reagan also starred in a short film she wrote, and produced called This Time, which gave insight into the reality soldiers face when they go off to war and then return home to see that the world they once knew has changed.
