DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER NOLAN SPEAKS OUT ON TRAGIC COLORADO SHOOTING

After the tragic shooting that happened at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado (which was an excellent movie, BTW), director Christopher Nolan has released a statement on the tragic shooting at the hands of a 25-year-old man identified as James Holmes. According to reports he came in to the theater through a back entrance, armed to the teeth with an AR-15, 2 Gocks, and riot gear. He threw tear gas into the audience, to which people thought it was part of the film but then soon realized they were in deep shit when he started shooting everyone for no reason.

Below is Nolan's statement:

"Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew ofThe Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community,” says Nolan.

He continues, “I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.”

Nolan concludes, “Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.”

While most are saddened by the tragedy of Colorado, I have to say based on the long lines to see this film when I went yesterday, many are unfazed by the shooting. Warner Bros. has responded by removing all gun scenes from their commercials. I don't understand the purpose of removing gun scenes from TDKR because it basically shows that you are giving in and blaming the movie as the reason why this shooting happened. It was one nut who is desperate for attention. I do respect the fact that the trailers for the upcoming Warner Bros. movie Gangster Squad was removed because, there is a scene in the film where several gunmen go on a shooting spree inside a movie theater.

I've been hearing so many conspiracies surrounding this move, from Rush Limbaugh's ridiculous comparisons to the Bane character being linked to Bain Capital, a former employer of Mitt Romney, to not being surprised that being that this is an election year the Republicans will try to use the film as a spring board to invoke their anarchist views on guns in America. Then they'll blame the movies for all the senseless violence in the world, when we need to reevaluate our gun control laws. TDKR is a film about the citizens of the world taking back their country from the greedy and corrupt 1% and I've been hearing that James Holmes was a plant to distract everyone from the movie's message and theories. Whatever the case may be 12 moviegoers were killed and another 59 were injured.

There needs to be better security in movie theaters as well. I live in new York City, and a long time ago there was a tragic shooting at Sunrise Multiplex in Valley Stream, Long Island, to which people were killed and injured. The theater responded by beefing up security and adding metal detectors. I feel all movie theaters should have that. I went to see TDKR in Union Square and I saw two cops posted at the front entrance. When this story dies down they'll be moved to somewhere else. We need to stop being episodic reactors to shit when it comes to tragedy and bring change and order to the world. because if I'm paying a shit load of taxes for things that I really don't care to pay taxes for, then the government can put up the money to keep the people of the United States safe.
