ANDERSON COOPER OFFICIALLY COMES OUT OF THE CLOSET
ATTENTION ALL BITTER QUEENS! You asked for it in your anonymous shady bloggings everytime his name is mentioned in a story, and now you have it. As we close out this gay pride month, Anderson Cooper has officially come out of the closet as a gay man.
Here's a bit of what he wrote to Andrew Sullivan in a long ass email:
The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud. I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist. [snip] I love, and I am loved.
In my opinion, the ability to love another person is one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life. I appreciate your asking me to weigh in on this, and I would be happy for you to share my thoughts with your readers. I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space. But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy.
This is some pretty good timing on Anderson's part, especially since he can now bring more gay topics on his talk show and Entertainment Weekly just ran a story last week on celebrities coming out subtlely to the public. We should also remember that on Anderson's CNN show, he has been a long standing advocate for the LGBT community and has explored LGBT bogotry on his show.
Yes he didn't acknowledge the pink elephant in the room on his daytime talk show, but so what? I personally don't think Anderson's ever hidden his sexuality, because he's been spotted plenty of times with his male love interests all over New York City. I really hate when people think just because you stand on a public platform that you have to shout out who you are fucking from the rooftop. People also have to realize that Anderson traveled to different countries for work, and some of those countries do not take too kindly to homosexuals. If he was out there flaunting his gayness like Derek J he would have been beheaded. As I have stated many times on this blog everyone should come out when they are ready and not because some shady queen hiding behind their computer wants you to. Everyone has their reasons for keeping their sexuality quiet, and we as gay people need to be a little more understanding.
So here's a question that I ask all of you. Is it an obligation for public figures to have to come out of the closet in order to be counted, or do celebrities have a right to their privacy? If you come out then you're flaunting your sexuality. If you don't come out then you've got something to hide. It's like damn if you do and damn if you don't. I am happy that we are moving forther into the mainstream, and homosexuality is not a big deal to some people, but where we draw the line? If straight people don't have to announce their orientation, I don't see why we have to either.
