WHOOPI GOLDBERG TAKES TO KICKSTARTER TO FINANCE DREAM PROJECT
You would think that with Whoopi Goldberg winning an EGOT and being one of the most influential people in entertainment that she would be able to greenlight a program at the top of a hat. Not so. The View co-host just revealed to IndieWire that she needs our help to finance her directorial debut and has taken to Kickstarter to do so.
Goldberg is hoping to raise $65,000 to finish producing her directorial debut, a documentary on comic, icon and her role model, the legendary Moms Mabley (born Loretta Mary Aiken). For those who are not in the know, Moms was a baudy broad who rose to national fame in the 1960s, and released over 20 comedy records. Mabley died at 81 in 1975 and if it wasn't for her, there would be no Joan Rivers, Wanda Sykes, Kathy Griffin, Joy Behar or Lisa Lampanelli.
Says Whoopi on her passion project: I have been financing the film myself. But you know, I'm doing that, I put together the show ["Sister Act"] for Broadway. I have limited funds. I have family. I take care of a lot of people on one check. So I needed some help. We were doing it and it started to get away from me and I thought, "I need some help!" And I thought, well, the Kickstarter folks are really good, maybe I can get some help this way.
It's a worthwhile project. This isn't a little bullshitty project. I thought there might be enough people out there who remember Moms who'd like to see this happen. When you run out of dough you have to start saving up again, and that postpones everything. I didn't want this to take five years to do. I thought it would be a good idea to go to Kickstarter and say "Hey, I'm doing this project." If you want to help get it done, this is a great way to do it. And people have been really remarkable.
I would love to see Whoopi get the funds needed to finish this project because it makes no sense why Hollywood is so quick to fund stupid remakes and unnecessary sequels, but won't put the money up for things that will entertain as well as educate an audience like myself who knows of Moms' stand up, but is not too familiar with her personal life.
