TRAILER TRASH: CHLOE SEVIGNY LAYS TRANSGENDER ASSASSIN IN NEW SERIES HIT & MISS

Here is your first look at Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny (Kids, Boys Don't Cry, Big Love) in her first lead TV role as a pre-op transgender contract killer.

The show, titled Hit & Miss was created by British screenwriter Paul Abbott (Shameless) follows Mia (Sevigny), a hired gun who discovers from her dying ex-girlfriend that they had a son nearly a decade ago. Suddenly faced with becoming a parent, Mia must quickly figure out how to juggle her extremely dangerous job with PTA meetings and carpooling.

While I like the fact that there is a series this groundbreaking on TV, I found the trailer to be quite disturbing. While I understand you need to make a statement to let everyone know what the show is about, a woman grabbing her penis while wearing her dress felt like she was told to do that by a straight man who knows dick about transgender issues. And while I am a fan of Chloë as an actress, I wondered why didn't they hire an actual trans actress like Laverne Cox or Candis Cayne to star? Maybe if the US decides to remake this into a series like they did with Shameless for Showtime then they can take my question into consideration.

So here is my question to you. Am I overreacting with my assessment over Chloe playing trans, especially when she has to wear a prosthetic penis on the show, or should it not be a big deal? This is in no way a judgement on her acting ablility, but I personally think if you are going to tell a story with a trans person as the lead why not hire someone who understands that world and can act to portray that character? We shouldn't only hire actual transgender actors to play streetwalkers. If they had hired a transgender actor to play the role of Mia I feel it gives the story more weight.
Hit & Miss and will premiere on Direct TV on July 11 at 10pm after Damages. So if you have other cable prviders like Dish Network or Time Warner, it looks like we're pretty much shit out of luck until they release the series on DVD.
