Whenever musicians head out on their world tour, I'm often fascinated not by what tricks they have up their sleeve to get the audience's attention (like Madonna flashing her lady bits to a room full of queens), but what's actually on their celebrity riders.
Madonna's kicked off her MDNA tour late last month and her rider has leaked online. The singer's entourage consists of 200 people, including yoga instructors, personal chefs and 30 bodyguards (why am I thinking of that terrible rap from American Life as I write this?).
Anyways, I'm also hearing the backstage area where she relaxes before each show has to be duplicated to look exactly like her own house, and according to a source, "Madonna requires all the furniture be removed from the rooms and replaced with her own pieces that she has shipped.”
She also has to have 20 international phone lines in her dressing room (what is she secretly working as a telecommunications operator?) and her furniture must be draped with some special fabric that smells of lilies and roses as well as have those actual flowers (with perfectly cut 6-inch stems) in the room. What...no Hydrangeas? All the food served and prepared by her personal chefs has to be vegan. And since Madonna's tours are always specifically done and she wears the same costumes each night, she also comes with her own dry cleaning service to freshen the costumes.
Say what you want but this woman gives all of herself to her fans whenever she performs, so if she needs all this stuff on tour to give the biggest stage performances ever, I don't see the big deal. As long as the dancers are luxuriating in all of the same things she's demanding (and also has alternatives for those in her entourage that doesn't like vegan food) I don't see why this is an issue.
