MADONNA GIVES LADY GAGA BACK-HANDED COMPLIMENT IN ITALIAN MAGAZINE INTERVIEW
Since the two ladies started touring, Madonna threw the first verbal punch in Lady Gaga's direction by performing a medley of Express Yourself/Born This Way/She's Not Me and over the weekend some footage of Gaga rambling onstage for a few minutes about dealing with people who try to put you down before she sang her song “Hair.”
Said Gaga:
"It sometimes makes people feel better about themselves to put other people down or make fun of them or maybe make a mockery of their work,” Gaga said to her audience. “But, that doesn’t make me feel good at all. That just make me feel like I’m not being a good human being. I feel that if you’re a really good human being, you can try and find something beautiful in every single person no matter what.”
“And it’s a challenge,” she continues. “But at the end of the day I learned so much this year about that. I learned a lot about negativity. I learned a lot about people trying to tear you down. And I’m just not that person, and I never will be. And I don’t even wanna fight back. Because, it’s more important to me to keep writing music. Cause that’s all I really care about. My music.”
“I don’t have a fanbase that wants me to fight or bite or be shady,” she adds. “Or cunty. The way that we all used to be. We’re in a new place in society now, aren’t we? Things are really different now than they were 25 years ago and that’s what makes Born This Way so relevant for me. We’re just socially in a completely different place now. And I want you to know it’s okay: You don’t have to hate and slice each other anymore.”
So after that little ramblization from the new generations' musical cult leader, it seems that Madonna may have thrown some shade once again. While sitting down for an interview with Italian magazine Repubblica, the reporter asked Madonna“Is Lady Gaga a threat or only another temporary ‘spice girl’?”
That Grape Juice claims in the Italian translation that Madonna replied by giving Gaga a back-handed compliment. Then, after her agent tried to divert the line of questioning back to her tour, the ‘Material Girl’ admitted: Closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, holds its breath. Invokes some kind of saints or demons to maintain self-control: “She is an artist with a great talent.”
Personally speaking I think the reporter's analogy was shit, trying to compare Lady Gaga to The Spice Girls. I'm not sure if they can think that far back, but the British pop group were as iconic as The Beetles. They had countless hits and sold out many venues all over the world. Now if the reporter would have compared Gaga to the disposable pop hookers Pussycat Dolls that would have been a better analogy. People should also keep in mind that these magazine interviews are done months before they come out to the public, so I'm guessing Madonna made her Gaga comment before the MDNA tour kicked off.
