While the first season was clearly having an identity crisis, it looks like the second season of Smash is about to become must-see TV when it returns in 2013. With the recently-announced additions of American Idol contestant Jessica Sanchez and Jeremy Jordan (Newsies) joining the cast, word on the street is that Oscar winning singer Jennifer Hudson is about to snatch plenty of wigs when she joins the cast as a new character.
Here's what Robert Greenblatt, NBC’s entertainment chairman had to say about Miss Hudson joining the cast:
“We’re thrilled to have Jennifer Hudson coming to ‘Smash.’ This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson. Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”
I actually think JHud is perfect for the small screen, and if you're keeping count that's three former Idol alums on Smash next season. She's already won an Oscar, and these days the best written parts are on TV. Hopefully her character Veronica Moore will get to add some of that sass that's missing from her solo music as of late, because when you have a voice like JHud's who the hell wants to be stuck singing mid-tempo tracks or ballads all the damn time?
