Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson, whose new album Not Your Kind of People will be available to purchase on may 15 sat down for a chat with Bullett Media (via Madonnarama) and opened up about the media's constant bullying of Madonna and their ageist comments against the superstar:
The tabloids complain about Madonna looking old, and people laugh at her for that.
Then Madonna goes and fixes her face, and they laugh at her for that.
Even thought they begrudgingly say she looks amazing, they’ll still laugh at her for trying to look young.
Then she steps out, looking amazing, and the tabloids go and blow up a picture of her aging hand.
Nobody’s doing that to George Clooney, blowing up pictures of his hands!
I look at these magazines, and I want to say to them, What’s your point? That she’s aged? Does that surprise you? Or is your ‘point’ an attempt to undercut what she’s achieved?
I think it is, even if it’s on a subconscious level.
And you probably wouldn’t turn down those hands if they were grabbing you under the table, you fucking idiots!
I agree with Shirley 1000 percent (who looks fabulous by the way). George Clooney hits the red carpet with his hair full of gray and no one says a word. If Madonna was to hit the red carpet looking like she needed to be wheeled out in a wheelchair, the media would have a field day. i find it rather disgusting that we are constantly putting so much pressure on females from the time that they are born that if they don't trap youth in a bottle and use their sexuality to court men that they are less than worthy to society. Yes Madonna is a pop star and looking fabulous all the time is required, but I feel we need to squash the double-standards.
As you all know by reading this blog daily that I am a hard core fan of Garbage and especially Shirley Manson (I live for a strong, feisty woman), and her comments defending Madonna made me love her even more. not because it's Madonna mind you, but because Shirley says it like she means it - unlike these other fake ass diplomatic bitches pretending to be revolutionaires.
