AVALON'S REVIEW: THE AVENGERS

So yesterday, I went to the movies to see The Avengers (which was packed), and while I enjoyed the movie, there were a few pet peeves that happened while I was in the theater.

#1 Parents if you are going to bring your kids to see a movie that is PG-13 (and by kids I mean you just literally gave birth 24 hours ago), leave their asses at home, find a babysitter, or wait four months for it to come out on DVD. There's nothing more disrespectful than someone bringing a baby to see a film, and the child cries for half the movie before a few people have the balls to tell them to take the kid for a walk. Also why must people have full-on conversations on their cell phones while watching a movie? Is your life seriously going to come to an end if you miss a phone call for two and a half hours? This is why I only go to the movies when there is a movie I really want to see. There seriously needs to be stricter rules on moviegoer etiquette.

Anyways, now that I got that off my chest, back to the movie. The Avengers picks up where Thor left off. After Thor and the people of Asgard believe Loki to be dead, he travels to Earth to get his hands on the Tasseract so that he can destroy the world and make the people of Earth his slaves. After Loki steals it from the hands of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Who want to use the Tasseract's power to harness it as a weapon against future invasions from creature more powerful than themselves), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) calls on Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America and The Hulk to help save the day. Thor joins the fight later after he comes back to Earth to take Loki back to Asgard to face his punishment.
I thought The Avengers was the best comic book movie I've seen in a long time. I'm sure people will debate and say The Dark Knight was the best comic book movie, but to me that's like comparing apples to oranges. The Avengers is more like a love letter to fanboys who have dreamt of the day when comic books would actually leap off the page to the big screen, and TDK is more grounded in realism.

I thought Joss Whedon (who I have been a fan of since Buffy The Vampire Slayer) did an excellent job assembling some of Marvel's favorite superheroes, although I would have loved to have seen Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow with more to do. I wasn't a big fan of the movie Captain America but he was definitely put to good use in The Avengers. After two bad movies, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk was in my opinion the best choice. I've also realized that the Hulk works best in small doses, not headlining his own movie. So if Hollywood were smart, The Hulk would only appear in future Avengers movies and cameo in other Marvel films (Mark has recently signed on to play The Hulk in six more films).

Robert Downey Jr. did not disappoint as Iron Man, and he definitely had his share of scenery chewing, but sexy ass Tom Hiddleston's return as Loki had him beat by a mile. I have a huge crush on Jeremy Renner and he definitely delivered as Hawkeye (he also made a cameo in Thor). He's intense and oozes sex appeal and is not afraid to get down and dirty with the rest of them. Thor and Captain America could have been given more to do, but their action scenes definitely made up for their lack of screen time.

I'm trying not to give away my favorite parts of the movie (for those who haven't seen it yet), but what made me really love this film is that Joss (who is a comic book fanatic) managed to do what so many have tried - make the pages of your favorite comic books come to life on the big screen. It had all the things that I love in my movies: Action, comedy, character development, and a villain you could sink your teeth into. CG has definitely come a long way and Joss definitely took advantage of that (in all the right ways), especially when Bruce Banner turned into The Hulk and started smashing shit. When the last hour of the film rolls around when New York City is torn to shreds, Joss Whedon makes a Michael Bay film look like kids table shit.
I know we have a while before the sequel comes out (Iron Man3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2 start shooting soon), but The Avengers 2 can't get made fast enough. Also if Marvel were smart they will sign Joss to write and direct all future Avengers movies (and he should bring his Wonder Woman idea back to the table, since he was attached to direct and write the script at one point).

Oh and last, but certainly not least after the new villain was revealed after the end credits, I say Ron Pearlman should play the villain.

My overall rating: B+
