AGAINST ME! SINGER TOM GABEL REVEALS HE IS TRANSGENDER
On last week's episode of What Would You Do, RuPaul's Drag Race alum Carmen Carrera revealed that she was in fact transitioning to become a woman. for the past eight months, a dear friend of mine named Kayden (formerly Geo Vaughn) has been transitioning to become a woman and went in for her top surgery in Miami yesterday (she is doing quite well, BTW). While it's great that gays and lesbian celebrities have been coming out more and more in the past few years, there seems to be a rise in celebrities transitioning into the opposite gender.
The latest celebrity to reveal they are transgender is Against Me! rock singer Tom Gabel. Gabel, who will transition into Laura Jane Grace revealed to Rolling Stone that he has been secretly struggling with gender dysphoria and that he will start undergoing hormone and electrolysis treatments very soon.
Gabel, 31, will also remain married to his wife Heather, who he says has been very supportive of his decision. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” Gabel says in the issue, out May 11. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
Gabel continues: “I’m going to have embarrassing moments and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you [Rolling Stone] is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
In the Against Me! song “The Ocean,” Gabel hinted at her desire to change gender: “And if I could have chosen/I would have been born a woman; my mother once told me she would have named me Laura; I’d grow up to be strong and beautiful like her.”
Congrats Tom on being brave and living your truth because I know it's definitely not easy especially being a rock star, a genre the mainstream media tries to market to angry, middle-American white males. I am curious if she will continue to front Against Me!
Tom is certainly not the first rock star to come out as transgender. legendary punk rock singer Jane Wayne County was a huge staple in the 70's and is someone I discovered when listening to Love Phones on Z100 in the 90's.
Tom aka Laura Jane Grace's Rolling Stone interview, where she will talk more about her battle with gender dysphoria and the future of Against Me! hits newsstands on May 11. Against Me! is on tour with The Cult through this summer.
I will admit I had heard of Against Me! but I wasn't familiar with their music. Now that I've heard a few of the songs, they're quite good.
