MTV STAR PAUL IACONO COMES OUT AS GAY
Actor Paul Iacono, who rose to fame as the 16-year-old nerd with a large penis for two seasons on the series The Hard Times of RJ Berger is the latest celebrity to come out of the closet.
Michael Musto revealed that the 23-year-old will speak candidly about many topics, icluding his sexual orientation in an upcoming interview with The Village Voice.
Iacono says he grew up in a traditional Italian family and pretended he was straight after his dad found an email he had written to a male date, but came out to them a few years later. His character in Kenzie's Scale realizes he's gay after moving to NYC to attend college. Here's what Iacono Told Musto:
The whole reason we came up with Kenzie's Scale is to give young gays characters to look up to. It's great that we have Chris Colfer, but we need more characters. I was so moved by your comment on Facebook that 'If I'd grown up with gay TV icons that were out, I'd have been so much better off.' I didn't have much to look up to as a kid. I had to search to find like-minded images. I'm happy to be that person so kids won't have to grow up and be afraid of their sexuality and this won't be an issue.
Adds Iacono:
I believe that in 100 years, none of us will be having to identify ourselves as gay, straight, bi, or otherwise. Sexuality will be a more fluid thing. The show is a progressive outlet of that idea.
The Hard Times was one of my favorite scripted shows (Death Valley is a close second) and it ran for two seasons on MTV. In the second season episode "Steamy Surprise," RJ discovers that Max (played by the very sexy Jayson Blair), a popular jock and bully on the show, is secretly gay when he sees him in the locker room showers making out with another guy. RJ was in love with Jenny, who dated Max but still promised he wouldn't tell anyone until Max is ready to come out. (Eventually, RJ does tell that one girl, Jenny.)
Congrats on living your truth at such a young age Paul. You, like many other actors will continue to pave the way so that being an actor and gay won't be such an issue. I'm still upset that MTV canceled your show but I am glad you will be back on the air in a new show for the network in 2013. I should also point out I had a thing for Jayson Blair and wish he was coming out too because that steamy shower scene he had with Guillermo was the cat's meow. I will keep you posted on the interview once it comes out.
