It's been a minute since we've heard any new music from Sky Ferreira (her As If! EP came out over a year ago), but it looks like Sky (who has also been channeling Madonna in a few photo shoots) is ready to push forth her music career once again. The model/singer has unleashed her brand spankin' new single Lost In My Bedroom, which is the most electronic that we've heard since her earlier songs. After her label decided to scrap her entire album (due to the fact that none of the songs registered with listeners and had a real musical focus), Sky locked herself away and has been working closely with Jon Brion (Fiona Apple) on a sound that will take her away from the electro pop sound that she bursted on the scene with.
Here is what she told teen magazine Rookie in a recent interview: I love live music. That’s what I’m trying to achieve on my new album—to make it something that can be played live. I mean, there’ll still be some dance music, but the majority of it I’m doing with Jon Brion, who did all the Aimee Mann records, the first Fiona Apple records, the Magnolia soundtrack. Working with him is almost therapeutic, because he’s not trying to make a hit—he wants to try something new, which is really exciting, because a lot of producers are just trying to make money.
Well I'm all for experimentation, but in this age of making music when you are on a label's dime, there has to be a few hits in there so that your music can be marketed. The worst thing you can experience as a musician is your music sitting on a shelf collecting dust because it's not hit-worthy. If that was the case Nicole Scherzinger would be as big as Rihanna. I say give us more fun electro-pop like LIMB but some really cool experimental music that we would expect from Jon Brion.
