OPRAH CANCELS THE ROSIE SHOW AFTER ONE SEASON
After five months on the air, OWN has decided to pull the plug on The Rosie Show after one season. The final episode will air on March 30.
“I thank Rosie from the bottom of my heart for joining me on this journey. She has been an incredible partner, working to deliver the best possible show every single day,” Oprah Winfrey says in a statement. “As I have learned in the last 15 months, a new network launch is always a challenge and ratings grow over time as you continue to gather an audience. I’m grateful to Rosie and the dedicated Rosie Show team for giving it their all.”
Says Rosie about working with Lady O: "I loved working with Oprah in the amazing city of Chicago," O'Donnell said in a statement. "I was welcomed with open arms and will never forget the kindness of all I encountered. It was a great year for me—I wish the show was able to attract more viewers—but it did not. So I am headed back to my home in New York—with gratitude. On we go!"
The Rosie Show started out strong in it's debut, bringing in 500,000 for the premiere episode but then fell hard to an average of 230,000 viewers per episode. Once the show wraps Rosie plans to return to her home state of New York City.
I'm sure people will be quick to say that it was her frequent talking of gay issues on her show that brought down the ratings, but I don't think that was the case at all. In the five months her show was on the air, her talk show underwent three makeovers which I think hurt her in the long run. The one-on-one segmants work when it comes to people like Piers Morgan and Tavis Smiley, but I think Rosie works best when she performs in front of a live audience. Another thing I have to say is that Oprah's high and mighty attitude towards 24 hour positive entertainment is backfiring on her big time. She turned her nose at negative reality TV, and yes being all positive worked for her on a one hour segment (that being her ABC talk show). But no one wants to watch people getting all spiritual and shit on a 24 hour basis. I think it may be time for Oprah to eat crow and get a few Real Housewives franchises on her network or there wone be a network for her to OWN in the long run.
