JASON MRAZ FIRST STRAIGHT MALE ARTIST TO APPEAR ON COVER OF INSTINCT MAGAZINE
While Instinct is mostly known for only having gay artists and models on the cover of their magazine (along with the occasional female pop diva), the mag opted to bend the rules a bit and chose sexy singer/songwriter Jason Mraz as their cover boy. Jason, who I had the pleasure of meeting during my internship at VH1 when he did an impromptu performance for the employees (something the artists do from time to time) has been an advocate for numerous LGBTQ organizations and charities. He's just the type that doesn't like to broadcast what he does in order to sell records or gain new fans.
Here is what the singer, who is using the gay publication to promote his new album Love Is A Four Letter Word (April 17) had to say about one of his best friends who came out during his senoir year in high school:
“One of my best friends in high school came out when I was a senior, and I thought that was one of the bravest things in the world,” said Mraz “Where we came from, it just wasn’t the popular thing to do or be. It made me more of a risk taker in my own life because I saw the example of the way he was living in just being himself.”
I've always loved me some Jason Mraz (this hobo Jesus look on the cover of Instinct doesn't do him any justice) and after this comment I love him even more. He feels so strongly about gays being equal to straights that he has opted not to get married until everyone is allowed to do the same. his strong stance on marriage equality eventually put a strain on his relationship with singer Tristan Prettyman. I'm glad someone out there actually sticks to their beliefs, since I've heard so many celebs say they won't get married until gays are allowed, but then later on change their mind.
