VIOLA DAVIS TALKS ABOUT LACK OF ROLES FOR BLACK WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD
Less than 24 hours after losing the Best Actress Oscar to Meryl Streep, The Help star Viola Davis spoke about the lack of positive roles for black women in Hollywood.
Viola said: “Do you know the black equivalent of a Meryl Streep? Or a Julia Roberts or a Nicole Kidman? The only category is for a strong authoritative hoochie mama. If you exude anything else, you don’t exist. There is no character for you.”
Viola said she dislikes racial stereotypes and nearly turned down the part of a maid in The Help.
But she said: “When I saw how rich the role was, it was a no-brainer.”
Here is my theory. While I like the fact that Viola and Oscar winner Octavia had meaty parts in The Help, they were still maids that they were playing, which makes them Hattie McDaniel with more sass. for 40 years Meryl has played the phone book, and I feel the reason Viola didn't win is because her character wasn't rocking her neck, pointing her finger, and serving shit pies to her annoying ass employer.
In the 84 years that the Academy has existed, there needs to be people of color who own their distribution, and their own studios so that they don't have to wait on the white money in order to get a film greenlit. Let's not forget the hell George Lucas (a white man, mind you) had to go through to get some people in Hollywood to invest in his movie Red Tails, which he wound up funding himself. it just pains me that we as a people have come so far, but Hollywood is stuck in a time where they have yet to realize that not every person in the world is a white male with blond hair and blue eyes. We are a diverse people and ALL of our stories need to be told.
What happened to all the other black directors Spike Lee, Tim Story, Antoine Fuqua, John Singleton and others who have made significant moves and plenty of great movies with black actors as leads. Every black actress shouldn't have to depend on Tyler Perry's nigger nonsense movies in order to get work. I wish I had Tyler Perry's money so that I could have my own studio and get real movies not only involving actors of color, but actors who are gay as well. We the people with amazing ideas that stand outside the box need to carve our own path and not wait on the permission to make things happen for us. Lord knows I'm working my ass off to be the change I want to see in the world. I just have to find a way to make my vision a reality.
