For those out there who listen to Odd Future, you are well aware of word nazis like members of GLAAD and a few other folks who have gone after Tyler, The Creator for the use of the word "faggot" and other words deemed misogynistic in his lyrics. Odd Future member and lesbian rapper/producer Syd The Kid has spoken out defending her mate's usage of the word.
“Most of the homos I know use homophobic slurs, and it’s never a problem unless someone who’s not a part of the group is using the word,” Syd says. “But a lot of people take things out of context, and you’ve got to understand that there is a difference between saying, ‘Hey, you faggot’ and 'Hey, faggot.' When Tyler says 'faggot,' he's not referring to gays, he's referring to lame people. And in our vocabulary, that's what the word 'faggot' means. I'm not offended by the word 'faggot' -- and I am one."
I get what Syd means, but then people will argue and say that he's basically calling gay people lame and that her defense of his using of it sounds ignorant. If Syd considers herself a "faggot" then Tyler thinks she's lame. I've always said it's what you say and how you say it that's the difference in conversation. We as gay people and some of those in our inner circle throw that F word around like we do the word "nigger" or "bitch." I would be more offended by someone who said "fuck you, you fucking faggot ass motherfucker" than someone who said "hey faggot what's poppin'? I say like other negative words we take the power back from such negativity and use it to our own benefit. But if someone does mean it in a negative manner, we also can't be afraid to call them out on their bullshit as well.
