MADONNA COVERS THE ADVOCATE
Madonna is on the cover of a gay magazine which means - it's time to drop a new album. The singer, who has been an ally to the gay community for the past 30 years took some time to sit down with the mag to talk about her gays, the beginning of the AIDS crisis and more.
On Abandoning Her Gay Friends:
“I never left them,” insists Madonna, echoing a lyric from Evita. “When you’re single, you certainly have more time to socialize and hang out with your gay friends, but then you get married and you have a husband and you have children, and your husband wants you to spend time with him. I’m not married anymore, but I have four kids, and I don’t have a lot of time for socializing.” She’s been back in New York for two years, after splitting with Ritchie. “I hope nobody’s taking that personally. It certainly was not a conscious decision. As it stands, most of my friends in England are gay. But I’m back,” she says, adding reassuringly, “Never fear.”
On How The AIDS Crisis Affected Her In The 80's:
“I remember lying on a bed with a friend of mine who was a musician, and he had been diagnosed with this kind of cancer, but nobody knew what it was. He was this beautiful man, and I watched him kind of waste away, and then another gay friend, and then another gay friend, and then another gay friend. They were all artists and all truly special and dear to me.”
On The Lady Gaga Comparisons:
“It seems genuine,” she says, also seeming genuine. “It seems natural, and I can see why she has a young gay following. I can see that they connect to her kind of not fitting into the conventional norm. I mean, she’s not Britney Spears. She’s not built like a brick shithouse. She seems to have had a challenging upbringing, and so I can see where she would also have that kind of connection, a symbiotic relationship with gay men.”
Two things: I wish they would have gotten an actual updated photo of Madonna and I'm over her talking about this movie W.E., which, I know only her hard core fans will go see because I could care less about King Edward and Wallis Simpson.
