It's been a year since Lady Gaga appeared on the cover of UK magazine NME (to promote her album Born This Way), and the rock mag has named Born This Way one ot The 10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever.
Based on NME's distaste for her latest album, the Bad Romance singer is none too happy and she even tweeted her anger (I'll get to her response in a moment). What makes a pretentious album? A groan-inducing concept, lots of highfalutin waffle, and a ridiculous cover. If you’re lucky you get all three at once. Here are some of the worst offenders
Here is what NME had to say about Gaga's album:
“For a while Gaga was the most exciting pop star on the planet. Then on Born This Way she seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced that she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy ‘anthems’ that couldn’t mask the fact the fun had left the building. Most Pretentious Moment: The German sung ‘ScheiBe’. Did electroclash die for this?”
Here's what Mother Monster tweeted last night in response to the rank: “Oh the irony of winning ‘Most Pretentious Album Ever’ from none other than NME. *eyeroll* I might laugh forever + then return to narcissism”
Everything NME has said about Gaga I couldn't agree with more. I liked her in the beginning when she was a fun breath of fresh air to the stale uninspired monotony of pop music. The minute she became successful off The Fame/Fame Monster albums, is when I saw the tide take a shift for the worse. Born This Way was filled with dated, uninteresting electro pop, bad lyrics, a badly photoshopped album cover, no songs that broke the top 10 (besides the titled track), videos and costumes ripped out of Madonna's, Roisin Murphy's and Grace Jones' back catalog, and choreography you wouldn't even see Abby Lee Miller from Dance Moms teaching to her children. The minute she started acting like her shit didn't stink I couldn't be bothered with her. She didn't walk the Red Carpet at the Grammy's (which is an absolute no-no), and I'm guessing her peers are tired of her bullshit because none of them voted for her to win any Grammy's two weeks ago.
What Gaga needs to do is stop thinking that every song, outfit, and music video has to have some deeep meaning and get back to making some catchy pop songs. It's okay to write a song that ridiculous but you can't get it out of your head. Madonna just did it with Give Me All Your Luvin'. She has a pretty good voice and can play the hell out of the piano. I've also realized that Gaga doesn't really go in on people in a negative way, so this is a new side of her we're all seeing. If everyone starts to turn their back on her and she spews venom at everyone that doesn't like her music, she'll have to depend on Twitter to promote her albums for the rest of her career because no one will want to interview her. So to this I say after your Born This Way tour, take some time from the spotlight, regroup, get some inspiration andcome back stronger than ever.
