A KINDER, GENTLER STUDIO 54 TO REOPEN
New York may be undegoing a recent police crackdown on the gay club scene (and a recent revival of XL, no less), but according to Michael Musto over at the Village Voice, legendary nightclub Studio 54 is slated to make a comeback.
Now for those few of you who have lived to tell the tale (since it closed before I was even born), Studio 54 was a legendary club where many debaucherous things went down, and was the frequent hangout for many celebrities, such as Grace Jones, Liza Minnelli, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Jackson, Divine, Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Mick and his then wife Bianca Jagger to name a few. Since we have more fun snatchers running New York City than creative types, Studio 54 will be turned into a posh club instead of the debaucherous party spot it once was.
If you're expecting lots of sex and drugs to go down in this place, you're sadly mistaken. Downstairs from what used to be 54 will be 54 Below, a 160-seat, wood-paneled cabaret room which will have some of your favorite broadway types as well as cabaret singers performing there. So it will be called Studio 54 but it won't be Studio 54. Got it.
Personally, I think it should be called something else. People who partied there I'm sure would like to keep fond memories of the place, and not have it tainted with some new Disney-fied version. But then again in an era where everything that's old is remade into something new but with the same name (see just about everything currently at the movie box office), I or anyone else shouldn't be surprised by this. Personally I think the only thing that deserves a remake is the movie 54 because that watered-down piece of shit that starred Ryan Phillippe is not the move.
Check out the video below for a look back at what once was.
