DANCE MUSIC TO FINALLY GET THEIR DUE AT THE GRAMMY'S
For years just like hip hop, the Grammy's has pretty much refused to acknowledge the fact that dance music has been a dominant force in the world. Now that dance is pretty much dominating the pop and Billboard charts, the Grammy's will pay tribute to the sound this coming Sunday.
According to Idolator, DJ's David Guetta and Deadmau5 will be providing the beats and the artists who will provide vocals will be Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and The Foo Fighters.
Says Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich:
“My feeling about dance is it’s such an immersive experience for the participant, that to put it on stage … where the audience is not a part of it … I don’t know, honestly, until we came up with the idea of doing it this way, I don’t know if it ever would have worked.”
While I love the fact that dance music will finally get it's due, Lil Wayne and Foo Fighters are not dance artists. Providing guest vocals on David Guetta's latest album does not count (I'm talking about you Lil Wayne), and I get that Foo Fighters' Rope single was remixed for the dance crowd. I can understand Chris Brown, but this should have been an opportunity for the Grammy producers to use our dance music allies like say Robyn to perform on stage. She's been putting out some awesome dance tracks, and even though her Body Talk record came out two years ago, a little promotion never hurt anybody. I would have also liked to have seen Skrillex be a part of this group, since he is nominated for a Grammy. Avicii, Dave Aude, Monsieur Adi, Duck Sauce, Diplo...I could go on as to who in the dance music world is due for their shine. But I guess if Madonna and Lady Gaga aren't working with them on their new music then the mainstream could give a shit. Why not allow the kids at home to see him in action on stage? So while I like the fact that dance music is getting mainstream attention, once again they missed the mark.
