NIGEL LITHGOE TALKS BIG SHAKE-UP FOR SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE SEASON 9
During the summer, one of my favorite reality competition shows to watch has always been So You Think You Can Dance. I guess it's because they don't showcase strictly ballroom (like Dancing With the Stars) or kill my favorite songs with karaoke renditions done by fame-seeking hopefulls (like The Voice, American Idol and X Factor). Many of the kids from the show have gone on to bigger and better things. Twitch has been in a few movies like Step Up 3 and Stomp The Yard 2, Season 2 runner up Travis Wall is a highly sought-after choreographer and has even done a few choreographed pieces for SYTYCD, and Mark Kanemura is the biggest star from the show to become the male lead dancer for Lady Gaga.
Here is what producer/judge Nigel Lithgoe revealed on Twitter: “#FOX have cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of MAY.”
Shortly after his first tweet, Lythgoe added, “Don’t worry #SYTYCD fans. I’m thrilled we have a new series. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.” More recently he further explained, “I’m certainly not mad at FOX they have supported #SYTYCD FOR 9 seasons. With the help of Mike Darnell I think we have some great new ideas.”
As I have stated before I am a hige fan of the show and I am glad that the show is coming back for another season. What has always irritated me is the annoying long ass dragged out stretch that shows like SYTYCD and American Idol take to reveal who has been eliminated. I think what needs to happen is that the dancers perform on the two hour show. They put up the numbers for fans to call at the end of the show to vote. Then next week they do the elimination round in the beginning of the show. Call out the bottom two guys and girls and the judges chop them in the first 10 minutes based on America's votes. Then you go to commercial break and when you come back get down to the performances. It might be hard to pair up the kids together since that's what they've done in the past unless they pair up the newbies with an all-star. That way their swan dance will be the performance of whatever piece they did in rehearsal. Or better yet, the Canadian version has a 30 minute elimination show. Why not do it that way?
I also think there needs to be less judging on the show. I never understand all the weeping willows speak some of these judges try to say to make themselves sound like eloquent wallflowers. The show should be about the dancers and less about which judge will be the weird Paula Abdul type.
The people who create shows like DTWS, AI, SYTYCD, The Voice, X Factor, and the millions of other competition shows need to realize it's a huge commitment to invest two times a week in show like these. If whatever they come up with works other shows should follow suit.
