KELLY ROWLAND WORKING ON NEW ALBUM WITH CALVIN HARRIS
Finally Kelendria has come to her damn senses. After caving in and giving us a boring ass R&B album instead of going full out with a dance record (which she should have done in the beginning with promising songs such as Commander and Forever and a Day), Kelly Rowland is collaborating with Calvin Harris on some new music. Kelly spilled a few drops of tea to London Evening Standard, For those not in the know, Calvin Harris is a major force in the dance music world and has worked with artists such as Kelis (Bounce) and finally broke through the U.S. market with Rihanna's huge hit We Found Love (and has another floor stomper on RiRi's Talk That Talk album called Where Have You Been). There's no word if their collaboration is for music on a new album for the international DJ/producer or some new music for a fourth KRow album, but as much as I am a Calvin Harris fan I'm really hoping for the latter.
In the interview Kelly talks about judging the UK X Factor, how she has become seduced by the London lifestyle (which is fitting since her music is more appreciated overseas than in the U.S.), motherhood, and if she would be jealous of Beyonce's baby.
On her love of London:
'I do love being over here, the people, the humour,' she says. 'But sometimes I get a bit homesick.' The other night, Kelly found herself missing America more than ever and, needing to get a fix of something that reminded her of the huge retail spaces of home, she put on some big sunglasses and an oversized hoodie and had her driver take her to the 24-hour Tesco on Cromwell Road. 'A big grocery store always reminds me of home and it felt good to walk along the aisles and buy my own stuff and take it back to my kitchen,' she says. Did she get spotted as she perused the BOGOFs and meal deals? 'Honey, I looked like a crazy person… no one recognised me.'
On Struggling To Find Her Musical Identity in the Shadow of Beyonce:
'I come from an R&B background so I was looking for something different,' she says. 'David [Guetta] had this house backing track and I just sang over it in a kind of soulful way. David said, "I lurve eeet!" ' The anthemic 'When Love Takes Over' with its peaks and troughs and uplifting chorus relaunched Kelly as a Euro-house diva, all oily legs, cosmetically enhanced cleavage, provocative dancing and killer heels.
On Getting The UK X-Factor Gig:
'I'd heard rumours he (Simon Cowell) wanted me,' she says. 'But really the call came out of the blue. I figured I'd been blessed with 15 years in the business and it was time to start letting other people have the benefit of my experience. I said yes straight away.'
On Getting Breast Implants:
'It's something I really wanted to do for myself, not for a man, not for work, for myself. And I love them.'
On Motherhood:
“I won’t be jealous when Beyoncé’s baby arrives. I’ll just be just happy to pick her up and put her down again.”
Kelly did find her niche which set off many an imitator to be an R&B singer going dance, and I even looked at Kelly as the new generation's Donna Summer. But then it seemed as if her team got scared and decided to go in a more urban direction, which, like I predicted caused her album to flop in the U.S. I always say you have to think bigger and promote your music overseas, since the European audience is more invested in allowing artists to be more creative than the American audience, who become more fixated on trends and the sound of the moment rather than actual creativity. I love the magic that Kelly had with David, but he's been used by so many mainstream artists Kelly needs to find another DJ/producer to collaborate with to crerate a cohesive masterpiece to mesh well with Calvin's production. Can't wait to hear what magic KRow comes up with. Kelly also has a Sexy Abs DVD with personal trainer (and Queen Latifah's ex Jeanette Jenkins) and her third album Here I Am is in stores now.
