While many other soaps are dropping like flies (One Life To Live's final episode airs this Friday), NBC soap Days of Our Lives is turning up the heat on their current gay storyline. We already have two gay characters on the show. Sonny, played by Freddie Smith and his boyfriend Will played by Chandler Massey. Well now comes word that starting January 12th, Emmy-award winner Jai Rodriguez (Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, Executive Producer of Logo's new series Bad Sex) will be joining the cast as Matteo, an old friend of Sonny's who will play a gay role model for Will who is struggling with being gay. Will and Matteo bond over their love of music, and Will’s coming out process will take place in episodes airing in late Feb and March,
While I am glad to see more gay characters represented in daytime (something OLTL caved into after receiving plenty of complaints in regards of their gay storyline, which was the most interesting thing about the now dead series), I'm starting to get a bit irritated with all these storylines about people struggling with their sexuality. What about those characters who have the "fuck you" attitude and don't feel like being gay is the end of the world? I also think being that DOOL is a soap opera, I'm hoping the gays won't be used as PC poster children and they will be allowed to salivate in all the drama that many of the veterans have endured, such as baby snatching, cheating and cat fights. Maybe I'll have to create a soap of my own in order to see that.
