FIRST LOOK: JEREMY RENNER IN THE BOURNE LEGACY

When I first heard that Jeremy Renner would be replacing Matt Damon in the Bourne franchise, I have to admit that I wasn't sure if that was a great idea. I mean, I am a fan of Renner's (loved him in The Hurt Locker and 28 Weeks Later) and he showed that he has the chops to be a future action hero in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. But taking over a franchise that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass help solidify as their own signature style of action and suspense had me a tad bit worried.

I know there have been many actors that have taken on the role of James Bond (with Daniel Craig being the only actor in my opinion to have fully succeeded as the rightful heir to the throne occupied by Sean Connery), but I don't look at the Bourne films in the same was as the Bond films. In fact, I believe that it was Matt Damon as Bourne that made the Craig Bond films a little more grittier.

Anyways, Damon was supposed to reprise his role as Bourne and said that the reason why he walked away from the franchise was because Paul Greengrass decided not to do another one after the studio wanted him to sign on for another movie without a script. After author Robert Ludlum passed away, years later author Eric Van Lustbader took the character of “Bourne” and launched his own series of novels under the same premise. The first of the movies based on his book is The Bourne Legacy which, as stated before stars sexy and talented actor Jeremy Renner.

Here's what Renner told Empire online about his upcoming role

“Yeah, it’s that same deal, it’s just a new set of agents with a different leash,” Renner tells Empire. “It’s the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you’ll know it’s a Bourne movie.”

Reenner continues: “My character is called Aaron Cross, but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, ["The Bourne Legacy"] has that same ticking clock, but it’s a new programme and new characters.”

So it's a Bourne movie but will focus on other characters instead of Jason Bourne? Might be interesting. I also remember when Damon was promoting We Bought a Zoo that he said if they make this movie and it flops, he will come back and reprise the role that made him a household name in the action world, and that the script has to be good and that they'll just pretend that the last one never existed. I should point out that Matt doesn't want the movie to fail, but that he was speaking in alternatives.

What do you guys think of Jeremy Renner (who will also be playing Hawkeye in The Avengers) as Bourne? The Bourne Legacy opens in theaters August 13, 2012.
