FIRST LOOK: HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS
Entertainment Weekly has given us a first look at Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner as the iconic fairy tale characters in the new horror film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which was directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow).
Here's what Arterton had to say about the film, which takes place 15 years later after killing the witch in the gingerbread house: "You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant... The heart of it is that these kids grow up to be bloodthirsty witch hunters."
She added that, while the film is a bit tongue in cheek, "it's also very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and there's a lot of cursing. It's kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really."
Gemma also explained what the characters are like in the movie? "Gretel is much more in tune with her spiritual side. Hansel is a typical action hero, cheeky, funny, a womanizer. She's much more of a thinker, intense, internal and bit more open-minded than he is."
Brilliant idea. Wish I would have thought of it myself. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters also stars Famke Janssen (X Men), Peter Stormare (Prison Break) and Derek Mears (Friday The 13th remake) and will be in theaters on March 2.
In other news, Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers film (and possible sequels and a spin-off) says that while he did not go after a big action role (he will also be seen in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and is rumored to replace Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in The Bourne Legacy), he will be taking a break from the genre for a while
"I never went after a big franchise," Renner said of his upcoming blockbuster slate. "I never went after a big action movie. They just sort of kind of manifested in a way... It started off by me saying, 'Why not be in a movie that will play all over the world, but that still has something that I can do in it?' Why not?"
"[I] was blessed to be a part of [the Marvel] universe," he continued, "because I love what Marvel did with something so fantastical and unrealistic, making it kind of plausible, like when they did "Iron Man". I just thought those were really great movies, the first one in particular... The character of Hawkeye was always cool. He's kind of a rogue, shadowy character. That's what attracted me to him. Then he's also a human being. He just has a high skill set, so they call him a superhero."
I think that's the exhaustion talking. i like Jeremy Renner alot because he's an intense actor and convincingly pulls off action. I loved him in The Hurt Locker and also 28 Weeks Later. I will keep my fingers crossed that we get him in other action roles.
