With one of my all-time favorite musicals West Side Story coming out on Blu Ray this past Tuesday, the last thing many would have expected to make the news was the still-unsolved death of actress Natalie Wood would resurface. In 1981 when Wood was married to actor Robert Wagner, the couple along with actor Christopher Walken (who was Wood's co-star in the sci-fi film Brainstorm) were out enjoying a weekend getaway on the couple's yacht Splendour. After some drinking on the yacht, Wood fell overboard and drowned, which was ruled as an accident. Now 30 years later, the captain of the boat has unleashed a new book claiming that Wood may have been murdered by her own husband.
The book, titled “Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour,” co-authors Marti Rulli and Splendour Captain Dennis Davern open up about the night Natalie drowned. Davern claims Wagner informed the captain that Wood had gone missing, but refused to call the coast guard. Also in the book, Wagner was furious when he saw Wood and Walken speaking, and smashed a wine bottle, yelling at Walken, “What do you want to do, f*ck my wife? Is that what you want?”
Shortly after this bit of tea was spilled from the book, it was announced yesterday that the case has been reopened as a possible homicide and Wagner as the white O.J. Simpson.
Here's the annoncement of the case being reopened: “Recently sheriff’s homicide investigators were contacted by persons who stated they had additional information about the Natalie Wood Wagner drowning. Due to the additional information, Sheriff’s homicide bureau has decided to take another look at the case.”
I've always had in the back of my mind from hearing this as a kid that maybe there was more to the story than the media was letting on. Hopefully since now forensics has gotten better over the past 30 years that we can now get to the bottom of something that is now being looked at as a cold case.
