GQ AUSTRALIA APOLOGIZES FOR TAYLOR LAUTNER HOMOPHOBIC COMMENTS
GQ Australia has called a mea culpa and has apologized for asking Taylor Lautner a question which many deemed ignorant and homophobic on their part. The mag says they did not mean to be offensive, but they were suggesting that Lautner is so hot that he'd be irresistible to anyone, regardless of gender or sexuality.
In the interview, the mag asked the Twilight heartthrob if Milk and J.Edgar screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and director Gus Van Sant, both who are openly gay made a pass at him at a dinner meeting they were having over the summer in Los Angeles. Black took to his blog to blast the magazine for their ignorance in regards to implying that every homosexual hits on every hot guy that passes their radar.
After much public outrage, Nick Smith, the editor of GQ Australia has posted a rebuttal on the publication's Facebook page.
"We’ve seen some of the comments floating around regarding our recent interview with Taylor Lautner and apologize if anyone was offended by anything in the article. It certainly wasn’t our intention to paint anyone in the story as a sexual predator. The point we were actually trying to push was that Taylor is irresistible to virtually everyone – regardless of sexuality or gender. Hence the film crew cheering at his shirtless scenes while shooting Twilight, and Mark Wahlberg deeming him better looking than Leonardo Di Caprio.
Taylor is an extraordinary young gentleman, and we can’t wait to see him achieve even greater success in the future. That’s why he’s on our cover – because GQ Australia prides itself on offering readers the best possible advice and insights that help you be modern, successful gentlemen. Whether you’re into fashion, food, fitness, pop culture, politics, travel, technology or cars GQ Australia strives to provide you with top-quality editorial content that allows you to make your own discerning choices."
I get the apology, but Nick still needs to learn that your definition of hot is different depending on each individual. Taylor Lautner may be hot to a lot of people regardless of gender, but there are some out there who don't find him attractive. As someone who despises political correctness, I don't want to be a word nazi and come down on people based on the things that they say, but I think the media who controls how many non-critical thinkers think need to be careful of stereotypes, especially since people can't tell the tone of what you meant during the conversation on paper.
