FOX BRINGING THE PUNISHER TO THE SMALL SCREEN
Three film adaptations later, it seems The Punisher may have finally found a more respectable home on the small screen. According to Deadline, Fox wants to turn The Punisher into an hourlong police procedural, where Frank Castle will work by day as an NYPD detective, and at night he will become The punisher, taking down the bad guys when he can't work beyond the badge. The show is being worked on by Edward Allen Bernero (Criminal Minds, Third Watch). Previous Punishers include Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson.
Other comic book series being developed for television include a new "Hulk" series, "Cloak and Dagger" and "AKA Jessica Jones," based on Brian Michael Bendis' "Alias." I wonder if Hollywood is reading this blog, because I recall saying that The Punisher would be better off as a TV series as well as Daredevil. I'm getting a bit tired of the typical police procedural shows that are all over the major networks, and I'm actually hoping when they bring The Punisher to TV it won't follow the same formula we're all used to seeing. I also say if HBO ever decides to cancel Hung, bring Thomas Jane back, but I'm not liking the concept of having Frank as a NYPD detective by day.
If he's a hard-edged viginalte, keep him as so, don't rewrite the story because you want to make him more accessable for people who may not be familiar with the character. I understand the majors are all about the ratings, but if this is your reason for tainting the concept, then it's better off not being made.
I always thought The Punisher was better suited for Showtime, FX or even Cinemax which is turning themselves into a network of original programming but geared more towards an action audience( with Strike Back and the upcoming Transporter series). I'm just hoping it doesn't turn into another Wonder Woman because we all know what happened when they attempted to turn her into a TV series for NBC.
