SPARTACUS STAR ANDY WHITFIELD HAS PASSED AWAY

Welsh actor Andy Whitfield, best known for his role as Spartacus on the hit STARZ series Spartacus: Blood and Sand finally lost his battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He was 39 years old. After the series hit big all over the world due to it's graphic sex and violence, STARZ was ready to go into production for the second season, but Whitfield had to unfortunately bow out after his cancer, which was in remission had returned. The network wanted to wait for him to get better which is why they created the six-part God's of the Arena mini series, but Whitfield suggested they recast his role.

Says STARZ President and CEO Chris Albrecht:

"We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion onscreen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”

The actor, who lived in Australia with his wife dies surrounded by family and friends when he passed. he will be missed. Check out the trailer for the new season Spartacus: Vengeance below...
