On the season premiere of Watch What Happens Live last night, Patti Stanger (who spent the whole hour making Andy Cohen squirm in her seat) has come under fire for a few anti-gay comments made on the show.
During one segment a caller asked her about monogamy, to which she responded, "in the gay world, it will always be open" and how she's thrown in the towel on gay relationships, saying, "I have tried to curb you people" and "in the gay world it will always be open." To be fair, she did say that once you find the right person you won't feel the need to cheat, but until then "there's always Grindr." I think many are upset because we've come so far fighting for equality that if Patti shines a light on those gay men who do have open relationships and aren't completely monogamous then we will have an even harder time trying to get those benefits we are entitled to.
Then later on another gay man called into the show asking why he is having a hard time finding a guy who wants to settle down in Los Angeles, to which she responded, First of all, you're very handsome, I thought you were straight...because (you're) not queeny.
First of all Patti, not all gay men are flaming queens so let's get that out of the way. If you need confirmation, check out the soldier that just came out that was booed at the Republican convention as well as the millions of other gays who don't fall into the stereotypes that happen to plague our media. Patti was an equal opportuunity offender last night, and while I did cringe at some of the things she said, I wasn't really that offended. maybe it's the New Yorker in me. She just needs to be more careful with the things she says in the future. I know people are calling for her show to be canceled, but if everyone is to be fired for saying something that offends you (since she is protected under the first amendment), no one would have a job. Hopefully this matter will be cleared up tonight on a new episode of Watch What Happens.
