SPARK IN VIOLENCE SHOWS HOW BLACK LGBT YOUTH CAN BE GREAT
While issues such as DADT and marriage equality are getting all the attention in the media, the oft-neglected Black LGBT youth get a chance to shine in the spotlight through a new social marketing campaign called Be Great. The Chicago youth-led campaign was designed to keep the peace among black LGBT youth, which has seen a spike in violent attacks (in not just Chicago but New York as well) in Boystown, a mostly-white area in which black and Latino LGBT youth often hang out (sounds like our version of the West Village). 600 people attended the rally to end the violence, which has also sparked a racial divide in the area due to criminal activity and a fatal stabbing that happened back in July that was caught on video.
Check out a video of the campaign below and also if you can check out their Facebook page as well. Hopefully this campaign can spread worldwide and do for New York what they hope will happen in Chicago, because we have some similar drama over here as well.
