The devil is once again plenty busy in Hollywood, because apparently producers are looking to once again ruin yet another 80's dance movie classic. While we wait for the remake of Footloose to unleash it's big tired turd at the box office this fall, Deadline is reporting that Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the original Dirty Dancing has signed on to remake the movie which catapulted the career of Patrick Swayze but left Jennifer Grey M.I.A. for decades until she won Dancing With the Stars two seasons ago.
Speaking of Footloose, Ortega was supposed to direct the remake as well but dropped out after High School Musical star Zac Efron (a trilogy of films he also directed and choreographed) dropped out.
The new film is a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.
“Amazingly it has been almost 25 years since the original film was released, but the fans remain legion, and engaged more than ever with a brand that is special and vital to them. We believe that the timing couldn’t be better to modernize this story on the big screen, and we are proud to have Kenny Ortega at the helm.” said Drake.
Instead of ruining yet another classic, how about coming up with an original idea or is that so hard to do? I don't need another movie from the 80's getting some watered-down Disney makeover so that you can introduce a new set of fans to a remake while they shit all over the original (or act like it never existed). I also have a strange feeling Ortega will hire Zac as Johnny Castle, Selena Gomez as Baby, Miley Cyrus as Penny and Ashley Tisdale as Lisa Houseman. They say no one put's Baby in a corner, but I think in this case, Kenny needs to head there and look down for the rest of the year.
