As the many strives as we feel we are making in the entertainment industry, there's always a reminder that some homophobic asshole with deep pockets would have the power to send shows that try to make pro-gay strives in their projects disappear forever.
Actor Eric Mabius, who played Daniel Meade on the hit ABC series Ugly Betty believes an anti-gay exec who had a problem with gay teen Justin Suarez's on-screen kiss with his crush Austin is the reason why the show was canceled.
"I'm pretty sure that the first teenage romantic kiss between two boys on network television was on our show, but did you hear anything about it? Was it promoted? The punishment was apparent every week. When they would run teasers for the next week's episode of other shows, they didn't even do those for us. That's how little support we had. It's short-sighted and silly. There was an undeniable feeling that the show was over at least a season early."
I felt ANC was trying to get rid of Ugly Betty since the second season. The show was indeed a hit and gayer than an entire season of Glee, but throwing the show on Fridays was the kiss of death and then abruptly moving it to Thursdays without letting the fans know also killed it's chances of survival. I think if anyone is looking to show any kind of risky diversity on TV never look at the major networks, since they're more interested in launching a thousand CSI, American Idol, and Glee spin-offs than creating an original idea.
