THE HANGOVER STAR TO PLAY THE CROW
After will they or won't they rumors that the Crow reboot was going to happen, it looks like the film has gotten the go signal. Tucker Tooley President of Relativity Media revealed that he has recruited Alex Tse the writer of Zack Snyder's adaptation of the graphic novel Watchmen to write a draft of the film, the 1994 hit which the late Brandon Lee. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) will direct and Bradley Cooper (Alias, The Hangover) will slip on Lee's iconic shoes as Eric Draven.
As you all know Lee was killed accidentally while shooting the goth classic. Some moron apparently loaded a prop gun with real bullets instead of blanks. The film was later finished using existing footage of Lee and CGI effects. Juan Carlos's adaptation is said to be a more gritty take.
Last night I was flipping through my TV and Once Upon A Time In Mexico was on. It was the scene where a long-haired Johnny Depp had lost his eyes and he was using a young Mexican boy as a guide to take out a band of killers. At that moment it hit me "why don't they cast Depp as Draven?" I know he's plenty busy with his role as Barnabus Collins in the movie adaptation of the classic TV series Dark Shadows, and his role as Tonto in The Lone Ranger. But seriously even though Bradley Cooper is a good looking man with eyes so blue you could get lost in them, I don't see how he fits into this role. When I look at The Crow, I see someone who has ethnic features. Someone more exotic. Maybe Lee's take on the role was so good I can't see anyone else in the role? So many sequels have come and gone, and none have managed to match the success and mood of the original.
Also since Hollyweird has a heavy track record of ruining classic movies with a thousand reboots, they can't be surprised by the skepticism of the fans. I like 28 Weeks later so I'm not judging whether or not Juan Carlos can pull off directing. I'm just nervous about the new casting choice and the choice of writer, since Watchmen wasn't necessarily as intriguing as let's say The Dark Knight and I'm a huge fan of the Watchmen comics. Then again, you can't get any worse than Edward Furlong.
